TORA UK, a Walsall based organisation is a registered charity (1122816) established in 1999 with its primary aim to provide relief aid to developing third world countries, its current relief operation is centered around the collection & shipment of hospitals equipment, clothes, educational materials, children's toys & general supplies to specific global areas of need, the main beneficiary being the country of Jamaica.

It is now evolved to not only cover the overseas relief work, but working closely with the local Citizen Advice Bureau. It has extended its delivery to also provide a professional advice service & community development project. The organisation offers advice & guidance on immigration, welfare benefits, family care, training & development, health & housing.

TORA relies on the commitment of dedicated individuals who volunteer their time & skills to raise awareness amongst the local communities in the UK nationally. However, due to lack of finance our project finds it most difficult to afford to keep up with many of the relief-aid demands, which often costs the lives of those children most in need. We know it would be a great sacrifice for you, but if you could find it in your heart to support this cause we would be most grateful. Please make your kind donation payable to TORA UK, thank you.

TORA UK is now recognised as a charity in Jamaica. This is good news for the organisation as it means that TORA's shipments can be cleared duty free "The process is quicker & much easier now", reports TORA's chairperson, Moses Whyte.

 History:

Ten years ago, Moses Whyte decided to do something about his long time dream to help the people of Jamaica, & in particular the people of his home parish, Trelawny. Out of that dream, the Trelawny Overseas Relief Association (TORA) was born. Moses & his wife, Victoria (popularly known as Bev) started collecting items to send to Jamaica.

At that time, much of the work was done from the Whyte's home. Bev recalls those early days. "The house used to be jam packed with the things we had collected", she said. "We ended up practically living in one room because of that". With a smile, she added, "I guess that gave me a taste of what it was like for our parents when they first came to England. But it was worth the sacrifice because we were committed to helping Jamaica in whatever way we could".

TORA sent their first shipment from their home "When we were moving that shipment, our front garden looked like a warehouse without a roof", Mosses said. "It was our children, Ishmiel, Daoud, Martin & Kimran who helped us at the time. Sonia Levy, who was the first member of TORA, was also an invaluable source of help to us in those early days". TORA soon acquired warehouse premises & that eased the strain on the family's living quarters. Moses said "We are grateful to Walsall Council who gave us storage space at Fairground Way, Corporation Street. Shortly after that, Goold Estates acquired that premises & we had to start paying rent for it. We were struggling with the payments & Goold was kind enough to offer us alternative space at the back of George Street for which we paid only peppercorn rent. We are still there today & we thank all concerned for accommodating us in this respect.

Greenvale Basic School, Deeside, Trelawny

Greenvale Basic School in Deeside, Trelawny is requesting your help in providing Teaching & Learning material for the school. These include pencils, notebooks, crayons, markers, paper, paint, play dough, puzzles, building blocks, story books, musical instruments & toys. All of these, as we are sure you know, are essential to the holistic development of the children.

The school would also welcome grants in the way of food items as it is the duty of the school, as providers, to offer wholesome, nutritious meals for the children so that they can be in good health, this is integral to their learning.

Finally, the school would also appreciate any monetary contributions of gifts that you or your establishment can offer. These would go towards the refurbishment & maintenance of the physical structure of the school which at the moment needs renovation.

"There are many other areas in which the school would appreciate your help, & as much help as you could offer would be greatly appreciated. The school hopes to develop a long & lasting relationship with all it's supporters & pay that God will richly bless you in all your endeavours", thank you in advance...
